HAYWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
This two level addition for Metro Nashville Public Schools added sixteen additional classrooms and work areas in two new wings. The existing school campus used portable classrooms and space was becoming very limited for new enrollment. A new secure entry point was constructed at the front drop-off area adjacent to the existing school office. Ground face block, brick masonry, zinc metal panels and glass are the major exterior materials used. Large windows figure prominently to help promote natural day lighting in the classrooms. Site constraints and topography necessitated a linear addition which also served to bring natural light into the circulation corridors. The massing of the addition also aided to preserve the remaining level area the school needed for outdoor recess activities.
