SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RENOVATION
@ Vanderbilt University
The renovations to Special Collections at the Vanderbilt University Central Library opened the space to the adjacent second floor gallery and allowed the extension of the displays into a dedicated gallery that could prominently exhibit artifacts that only Special Collections could present. The gallery space is wrapped in wood paneling which is used throughout the library and incorporates built-in glass-fronted, secure displays. A large, open Reading Room at the center of Special Collections provides comfortable research space for both students and visiting scholars. A separate workroom was created with dedicated shelving curated by the Special Collections Librarians. Offices were created around the Reading Room with glass walls both to allow natural light to enter and additionally, to provide vitally important visual control for visitors who may be handling rare and irreplaceable media. A special visiting scholar office was created that allows a guest to have a dedicated, secure work environment.
