Located in Foley, Alabama close to Gulf Shores, the Palms is a mixed-use development consisting of retail space and 350 residential units on one 80-acre site. An additional 350 apartment units are planned to occupy an adjacent 40-acre site. Small, regional retail shops with residential units above form the edge along the main thoroughfare, Highway 59. National retailers provide the bulk of the retail square footage, and a small residential area provides the transition between the retail and the proposed park. Clear pedestrian connections are provided between the residential and retail areas emphasizing the village concept for the development. Courtyard entrances for the condominium units create "pocket parks" that are physically and visually connected. The site plan for the apartments uses parking courts to allow each unit a view to green spaces rather than parking areas.
